I picked up some Via instant coffee from Starbucks today to see what the fuss was about. While I was there, I also got a small brewed coffee. I haven't made the Via yet, but I can already report that Starbucks' claims in their marketing are plausible: you could totally mistake their coffee for instant.

Actually coffee is where the heart is. Er, coffee is what you are used to.

I've gotten used to Charbucks. I now find the Dunkin is too weak in coffee taste, yet heavy in too much cream and sugar if I let them fix it. If I remember to say Milk and 1 Sugar (and have you seen what they call 1 sugar?), Dunkin is OK. And Peets just doesn't do it for me.

Yeah, I could make coffee at home and often do. However, when I'm traveling or at a customer, there is nothing like the Charbucks on every corner.

Let us know. I was wondering about that stuff....

Though to be honest, I can't think of anywhere I'm likely to be where I'd have fresh hot water but couldn't get coffee without only a little extra work. The places I'd really want instant coffee I also wouldn't have hot water.

I'd say the difference between normal instant and this is about the difference between brewed and pressed. Maybe that's their secret?

I judge coffee based on whether or not I can drink it black and enjoy it, noting also that I do not like drinking hot dark water. In this respect, both Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts fail. I think there's a significant mix between process and bean, though. For example, most things in my Jura-Capresso I can drink, and even DD coffee is quite good. Starbucks (French Roast), OTOH, I've never found to be terribly pleasant.

I drank Via first made in hot milk, Chilean style, which was made of fail. Then I made another cup in hot water and took a sip to see how much cream I was going to need to add and was quite surprised that the answer was "none". I disagree with the roast and probably the selection of beans, but being able to even have a conversation about the roast characteristics of instant coffee is quite an achievement. And it did have the advantage of not having sat in a Bunn coffee burner warmer for who knows how long.

I haven't tried it made in cold water, which I hear you can do.

Oh, and for the record, I'd say it was about even (in quality, not taste) with Green Mountain's "Breakfast Blend" made from a K-cup.
