What's this?

Hint: it's not the thing in this userpic.

My first guess was Crash's backyard, but it's the wrong side of I-495. :)

How about the home of the SETI project? I think it's somewhere near Harvard.

It wasn't until after I made my guess, that I recalled that you were involved with the project. Did you do build boards? Is there one of them in your living room?

I did! The 2x scale plot of one of the boards is not currently on the wall of the living room, but it has been in the past.

I wonder how big the boards would be if it were built now (and would it be faster?)

The total compute power of the combined system, which occupied about four cubic meters of space, was very slightly faster than a Sony PS3.

Yup! Nice touch with the picture of the object in question.

It's not the Mendon Twin drive-in theatres, is it?

Hm, nope. That's this.

I have no idea, but do you know what this (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&om=1&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=35.201032,139.024472&spn=0.001346,0.002596&t=k) is?

It looks like a multi-line trawler.

Bonus question: If the dish in the puzzle isn't the dish in my userpic... what's the dish in my userpic? Hint: the userpic keyword (seti) is misleading, and one of my other userpic keywords would be much more appropriate.

I'm guessing part of the VLA out where it is flat, open and doesn't snow much. ;-)

Too much vegetation for that.

This whole entry was brought to mind by the "How Massachusetts Are You" meme, on which I scored 100%; in posting about that (in someone else's LJ) I wanted to use an icon other than my default (which is in Missouri) and that got me thinking about some interesting local objects.

The dish in the user pic is one of the dishes on Millstone Hill in Groton, near the Westford town line. I believe the facility in question is the MIT Haystack Observatory, and it's just across the parking lot from a really nifty Buckminster Fuller dome.
If I had to, I could probably venture a fairly accurate guess as to the time period when you took said picture as well.

When I was a child, I have memories of going for walks at Drumlin Farm (owned by the Audubon Society) in Lincoln, and seeing the huge spinning radar dish over the trees at the nearby Nike missile base (http://ed-thelen.org/J-McGrath/NSLINC.HTM). I found it much more interesting than the nature at Drumlin Farm (except for the darkened room with the night flyers).
