By the time I got home and ready to give out candy at 5:35 there were already a few kids on the street. Another record year:
28 kids by 6:00
92 kids by 6:30
100 kids by 6:35
147 kids by 7:00
200 kids by 7:11
222 kids by 7:30
240 kids by 8:00
250 kids by 8:15 or so, and then nothing until 9:15
261 kids by 9:30. The after-dinner kids are mostly well costumed 12-15 year olds in a small number of large groups. They're much less shy about ringing doorbells than the little kids are. I think there were still another dozen of them out there who might have come by if we hadn't shut off the porch light in order to go fetch take-out and watch Shaun of the Dead. I wonder if those kids have been out there all along or if this is a new phenomenon.

A bunch of us on the block are thinking that next year it is time to get the city to close the street.

Wow. We are lucky if we get two dozen or so in Newton. And we decorate a little and leave the light on. I suspect a lot of the difference is there aren't a lot of kids in our neighborhood. More families with young kids are moving in, so we will see what happens.

At least in Newton there is a sidewalk. IIRC in Waltham with no sidewalks (~15 years ago) we got even less than that.

Unforutnately this year, we left the light off all night. I'm in the UK and SMOZZ had a class.

I love that you keep track. And I'm amazed at the numbers!

I heard them last night and I think if next year I am not sick I am going to follow Clue's route http://cluegirl.livejournal.com/762733.html?#cutid1

We're less than a block away. We set up a huge display at the back of our house from which we can see your house.

I still think we got only half that much. Good grief!

I think your street sucks all the trick-or-treaters out of the rest of the neighborhood. Though [livejournal.com profile] gosling reported Highland Rd was fairly busy.

Our leftovers are on the table by the support folks; have at. :-)

Yumpin Yimminy. We got maybe 25 total... we had a total run on the house somewhere around 7:45 - the older kids were starting up then. We have a nice cul-de-sac area, so it's great territory.

We got the most ever this year, though many of them were in the 10-12 age range. "The most" being maybe a dozen or so--far more than I expected. Then again, we're on a busy street without sidewalks. (The side streets get more kids.)

We hit our average - about 20 or so. I mised most of them because they came early this year: 6-7 instead of 7-8. Damned daylight savings.

A couple of us in our neighborhood are thinking of trying to do something more organized next year. We'll see if it happens.

Me = in Australia

!!!!

Is that standard?

I think I know one person who bothered to have lollies on hand and they didn't get a single participant.

I think it would be fun to have Halloween in your street.

It's not unusual for trick-or-treating to be very localized with parents driving their kids to a "safe" neighborhood, often defined as one where other parents take their kids. Typically a kid will hit a couple dozen houses, and so you'd expect a couple dozen kids at each house on average, but the standard deviation is huge.

This year was unusually good weather for late October. I'm not sure if the 25% increase over last year was because of that or because word is getting out about out neighborhood. I'm thinking more the latter because the weather was pretty pleasant last year too.
