Over the past year Arisia has had a succession of themed parties. Besides the "Mini" themed Worldcon party, we had an m+m mandala at Balticon, and an Oreo party at Lunacon. Some of these themes are repeats from a decade ago (they mostly don't stand repeating more often than that), some are new, and there will be some new themes over the next year. But I'm also thinking about how to improve and combine them. And to that end I've been collecting mini m+ms.

Now while regular m+ms are available in 21 individual colors on the web, mini m+ms are only available in bags of the traditional 5 colors. Except when they're not. So I got some black and while mini m+ms when they were doing the "where are our colors" thing. And I got some Sinbad promotional m+ms, and some Shrek promotional m+ms. Including the ordinary colors, I now have at least small quantities of 14 of the 21 possible colors, plus two impossible colors. And I'm keeping my eye out for new m+m promotions or holiday events.

I found "princess" themed mini m&ms at Disneyworld - light blue, pink, dark rose, purple, yellow, dark gold, etc. And at Easter, they tend to do a different pastel run.

I've also see them in blue, black, red, white and yellow but I can't remember how that tube was labeled.

I love mini m&ms

ooh, I don't have the dark gold, and I don't have a lot of some of those other colors. Next time someone says they're going down I'll ask them to bring me back some.

I also don't have all the colors of blue, or very many black or white, so I'll be keeping an eye out for that tube. For now, though, it seems to be all Shrek all the time.

If only any of your circle of acquaintances lived anywhere near Disney World...

On the m&m website you can order any color you want and you can get them printed with anything you want - so Arisia m&m are a possibility.

What are you planning to do at worldcon?

ah ... but only the regular size m+ms, not the mini ones. So sad.

I haven't been paying as much attention to the Worldcon party as I should. In particular, I haven't arranged space for a party, and it's getting kind of late for that.

Last year we brought in a bunch of US-only foods. That landscape has shifted some and I'm not really sure what qualifies any more. Any thoughts on that?

I'd particularly like to have five or six bottles (or cases, or whatever) of US-only alcohol, and open one each hour during the party. But I'm even less sure about what's US-only for booze than I am about the food.

Well, the different kinds of oreos are good. You can get regular oreos here, but that's all. Twizzlers are another good bet, as are most types of non-fancy crackers (ritz, saltines, triskets). We'll have to think more about candies, but there are certainly some. Any sugar cereal with marshmallows would be US-only as well.

US only alcohol is a tougher call. You can get most american whiskies here, Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort are everywhere, and you see Makers Mark, etc occasionally. I haven't seen rye whiskey here, so that may be a good bet. Hey, if anyone will be in New Orleans before the con, you could get Herbsaint and Peychauds bitters and make sazeracs... We'll think more about it.

Update on Worldcon hotels

The Party Cluster (1000 beds) is centred on the Hilton, which will host the ‘US style’ evening parties, and also includes the nearby Marriott, Holiday Inn and Milton hotels. The Party Cluster is one stop from the main convention site via the Glasgow light rail line.

Note: the main allocation of rooms in the Marriott hotel is now sold out. The Hilton is around 70% full. We still have plenty of rooms in the other hotels. We also hold a small reserve of rooms for people who have access / mobility issues or who will be running parties - details on how to apply for one of these will be published here in the next few weeks

what about beers?

do you need to stick to hard liquor? I'm sure you could bring some great small brew house beers over...

Beers are always a good bet - but I was thinking that it would be difficult to bring that much alcohol over That being said I have beers I would love to have again - mostly brewed by Will's family

Back when the Slightly Higher in Canada parties were in full swing, we just asked any Canadians who were planning to attend a convention at which we were hosting a party to bring some Canadian beer (usually people brought twelve) across whatever international boundary was relevant. Often, folks would just donate them to the cause.

Update: Turns out that two of the colors I thought were regular colors are in fact special ("impossible") colors. So I'm missing more colors than I thought.

Very cool! I know FAO Schwartz has all colors of M&Ms, but in the normal size - I'm not sure about the minis.

You can also see if anyone you know will be in Vegas anytime soon - they have an M&M store with tons of stuff and may have a huge assortment of mini m&ms beyond the common 5.
