Much has been written about today's victory in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. But I think what makes me happiest is the reclamation, by a community known for reclaiming symbols, of America.

It's nice to be on the side that gets to wave the flag instead of feeling oppressed by it.

that's why i brought an american flag with me to the festivities yesterday. i was surprised at the low flag density -- i had brought two spares, and only saw one american flag that i hadn't handed out (and i wasn't sure about that one). still. one cannot let the bad guys coopt that symbol. and at least they weren't waving them either.

I wish I had thought to bring a sign or a flag or something but I content myself with the knowledge that I was one more body on the good guys side :)

Thank you for bringing the spares! It was a great feeling to see them and to wave them!

edited to have a more direct reference to the flag-waving. Though it's still worth noting that the Phelps crowd reinforced our claiming of the flag as a positive symbol by using it as a negative one (http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20040517/i/r1376038415.jpg).
