Seems the running times on the Grand Challenge site were elapsed time, not running time. The bots all had "pause" buttons to allow passing in safe areas, and the Gray Team (which they had dubbed 'KAT-5') had spend about three hours in pause mode, giving it a much more respectable (but still not winning) time.
